Presentation Tips




Here are some important things to remember if you are giving a presentation.

Before:
First you need to summarise your three or four main points. After this, find out about your audience: Who are they? How many of them will there be? It is also vital that you research the topic you will be doing your presentation on (the internet, reports and ideas from colleagues are all good places to start)

Prepare your talk:
It can be very helpful to write the presentation out in full putting the main points on key cards. Please make sure you write clearly so that you can read your notes easily. Another important undertaking is to number each of your key cards so that if you drop them you can rearrange them easily.

Decide well in advance if you need to use visual aids or not. Projectors, computer graphics, handouts and flipcharts are all good materials to use. Be sure to write things big enough so that people at the back of the room can read it.

Practise:

Try recording your presentation into a tape recorder or ask a friend to be your audience and to give you feedback at the end.

It can do no harm to test the equipment in the presentation venue beforehand – imagine turning up only to find that the projector is not working and you have no handouts to give the audience!

During:
Speak slowly and clearly and try to not let your nerves run away with you. Maintaining eye contact is also very important.

After
Be sure to ask the audience if they have any questions they would like to ask and try to give them a proper response each time
